Interdisciplinary Nature of Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is an interdisciplinary profession. Indoor air quality consultants typically are engineers or occupational health and safety professionals. However, whatever their background, an indoor air quality consultant requires skills from several disciplines:
  • Building Science
  • Building Mechanical Systems
  • Architectural Technology
  • Mycology (the study of fungi)
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Toxicology
  • Indoor pollutant testing protocols
  • Environmental Management
Because it is difficult to find one person with all of these skills, a building assessment often requires a team of professionals with complimentary skills.

IAQm possesses many of these skills and collaborates with other professionals when additional expertise is required.
