LEED Indoor Environmental Quality
IAQm offers advice to architects and engineers to optimize indoor environmental quality in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) buildings. Ideally, this consultation process should take place in the earliest design stages.Strategies include considerations for supply of filtered outside air, ventilation effectiveness, moisture management, and control of air contaminants. Examples include:
- locating outside air intakes away from possible pollution sources
- attention to building materials selection to minimize off-gassing potential
- selecting materials and furnishings that are easy to clean and maintain
- keeping building materials dry during construction
- protecting the air handling system during construction
- integrating automatic sensors and controls into the HVAC system
- using natural day lighting
- installing noise attenuation between occupancies
- reducing occupant exposure to electromagnetic pollution
